Australia has an extensive system of waste collection across all capital cities, regional and most rural areas, the tyranny of distance has meant that many remote communities do not have the most basic of services or the necessary infrastructure including bins and landfills. This is particularly the case in many aboriginal and Torres Strait island communities where decades of social disadvantage and poor waste management continue to contribute to low public health outcomes and high rates of mortality and disease.
